How do I find out…
Most of what a county does is on the public record. It is just scattered across a dozen offices. This is where to look, with links straight to the source.
Who owns this property?
Nye County's Assessor publishes an online parcel search covering roughly 60,000 properties. Search by parcel number (8 digits) or account number (2 letters plus 6 digits) from any tax bill, or by address. It returns the owner of record, assessed value and parcel details. For the deed itself, the document showing how ownership transferred and any liens, go to the Recorder.
How do I request a public record?
Nevada's Public Records Act (NRS 239) makes government records open to any person unless a specific law makes them confidential. You do not have to explain why you want them. Nye County takes requests through its Public Records Request page. The agency must respond within five business days, and if it withholds anything it must cite the legal authority for doing so.
What is the county commission deciding this month?
Agendas must be posted publicly before each meeting under Nevada's open meeting law. We index every published agenda and minutes document and link straight to the county's own PDFs, so you can read the source rather than a summary of it.
Where does the county's money go?
Adopted budgets are published each fiscal year, and the county maintains a transparency page covering spending and financial reporting. Budgets show what was planned; the commission's agendas and minutes show what was actually approved, including contracts and change orders.
How do I look up a court case?
Nye County has a District Court handling felonies and larger civil matters, and Justice Courts handling misdemeanours, small claims and preliminary hearings. Which court holds a file depends on the case type, so start with the courts index.
Who approved this development, and can I object?
Land use runs through Planning and Code Compliance, with the Pahrump Regional Planning Commission handling applications in the Pahrump area before they reach the county commission. Planning agendas are posted in advance and carry a public comment period. Objecting is easiest before approval, not after.
Who controls the water here?
Water rights in Nevada are administered by the State Engineer at the Division of Water Resources, not by the county. Its database shows permits, certificates and applications by basin and owner. Locally, the Nye County Water District governs district matters and reports to the commission.
Does Nye County publish open data?
Not as a dedicated open data portal. The county runs a GIS with parcel and boundary layers, a transparency page and published budgets, but there is no single machine-readable download comparable to a city open data catalogue. Bulk parcel data is sold by commercial resellers. Where useful public data exists only as PDFs, we parse it and publish what we find.
Who do I actually call at the county?
Nye County publishes its staff directory across 76 separate department pages with no search, which is why almost nobody finds anything in it. We pulled the whole thing into one searchable page: 526 staff across 58 departments, with phone numbers and the emails the county publishes. Search by name, job title or department.
