Getting Caught Is Not the Problem

People here get caught. A commissioner, a sheriff's captain, a sitting judge, and the record is public every time. The problem was never that the truth is buried in Nye County. It is that it surfaces, regularly, and nothing moves.

In 2009, a Nye County brothel owner pleaded guilty in federal court to bribing a county commissioner. He admitted the payments, the family trust he ran them through, and the fake law school scholarship memo he used to paper it over. Then the county's own licensing board let him keep his brothel licenses. A fine and a probationary period. That was it.

That is not a story about a brothel. That is how this county works.

People here get caught. A sheriff's captain admitted to a false arrest that ended in a $400,000 settlement, and got probation. A commissioner was convicted of felony bribery and sentenced to probation and an ethics class; the Nevada Supreme Court later threw out two of his three convictions, and in 2022 the state pardons board granted him an unconditional pardon. A sitting Pahrump judge was convicted on seven federal counts, pardoned before sentencing, lost her primary in June, and has been paid $194,000 in salary and benefits since the month she was indicted. A former commissioner is under federal indictment right now over more than half a million dollars in pandemic relief money.

None of that is hidden. It sits in dockets, audits, and ethics filings that almost nobody reads. The problem was never that the truth is buried here. It is that the truth surfaces, regularly, and nothing moves.

That gap is what this site is for.

Every claim we publish will have a document behind it, linked, the way the paragraphs above are. Case numbers, filings, audits, permit files. Nothing behind a paywall if we can help it, because a source you cannot open is not a source. Alleged will be called alleged. When we get something wrong, we will say so in the same place we said the original thing.

There are already angry Facebook groups for all of this. Some of what gets posted in them is true. Some of it I cannot verify against any record that exists. People in this county have spent fifty years counting on nobody being able to tell the difference.

The first story is close. If you are on the list, you get it first.

And if you worked for the county, sat on a board, or filed a complaint that went nowhere, you already know where the paper is. Send it.
